What is happening??? I cannot be this old person who says there is nothing good on TV anymore... but it seems to be true!! Commander and Chief... and awesome show.... MIA. Love Monkey one of the freshest things I've seen on CBS since Medium... gone, The CSI's are dragging severely and bombarding us with reruns while we are pelleted with reality crap and cheesy new sitcoms that make me glad I have a book to read. Am I the only one noticing this trend???

I agree. Seems the writers are dashing off garbage just to make a deadline. And there's simply too much of trying to be "politically correct".
As for reality, the "how it's done" type, aint too bad, but I'll never watch any of the garbage putting a buncha people under one roof for a month, or any dating shows, period. They're krap!
How can WE do our bit to influence what's on TV? E-mail or paper-mail the networks and the local stations. Take the Neilsen Survey as often as they will allow it.

what really annoys me about the whole thing is the total unpredictibility of when and where new episodes of any shows even air! there doesnt seem to be any such thing as a tv season any more.....unexplained disappearances for months( Prison Break, Commander in Chief , now invasion,to name a few)season finales beginning in feb. and march??!! (surface , monk, etc....) weeks and weeks of reruns ( Smallville, CSIs adinfinitum...) showing new episodes on nights other than schedualed times ( In justice...) and schedule shellgaming ( Las Vegas, Law and Order(s) , Supernatural,etc.. ) and successful shows purposley sniping time slots on other successful shows( the afore mentioned Law and Order gunning for Losts time slot for one, though by far the worst offender- not to mention the most offensive in my oppinion is the reality goliath American Idol) its frustrating if not maddening to even try to watch!...i have tivo and its still confusing. i feel like im being conned and teased by some bait and switch grifters all vyeing for the same street corner- speaking of tivo- has anyone else noticed the odd start and stop times for some network shows these days? (9:01- 10:05 for example) - are they purposley trying to sabotage viewers who use dvrs!?- what a mess!!- yeah i guess im a little upset huh...

The whole thing with the 9:01 is to try and get you not to switch networks but I always don't Tivo the one that does that. It's annoying but there are still quality shows out there.

I used to watch so much TV in my 20's. It cant be that I am old because I am NOT! But TV sucks now (basically) I grew up watching "Cheers", "All in the Family", "The Cosby Show" and MANY great tv shows. They are all gone and not one tv comedy has had that magic these shows had. (Maybe Friends & Seinfeld) in recent years. But we have WAY TOO MANY REALITY shows on TV. PLEASE no more Survivor, Real World or Court tv. I cant stand them, and the worst TV show of all is "Desperate Housewives" WHAT GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I watch 3 hrs of tv a week, its American Idol and classiic TV. SO Networks, please bring back Quality TV!!

Comedies are too afraid of "offending someone" insteada just letting it rip as "All In The Family" did. "American Idol" is the Amateur Hour minus Ted Mack, & not too bad mosta the time. game shows are being careful after ?Millionaire" 's burnout.
As a former cop, I can tell ya the "L&O" series & "CSI" are among the most realistic cop shows we've had for awhile. I'm just getting useta to Farina's replacing Orbach, whose Lenny Briscoe char was my fave.
Court is generally MUCH more dull than the court shows.
Dating/relationship shows all suck. I don't give a #$%& who's doing whom. And cramming 12 idiots in one cottage is just plain TRASH. If that was all that was on TV, I'd plug an X-box or PS into every one of'em.
As I said, the sponsors are sensitive to our input, & the nets are sensitive to the sponsors' input. Get the picture, folks?
THANK GOD FOR SPORTZZ!

I agree that TV is basically GARBAGE!!!! Reality shows and low quality tv shows are taking the country hostage with these God awful programs on the airwaves. No wonder they call it a "Boob Tube" You have to be a "boob" to continue to watch the crap the networks are putting on their stations. If Network execs were normal people instead of money hungry spineless jellyfish who sell their soul to the devil to line their pockets, we may have something decent to watch on tv. Thank God for DVD's and the outside world, or I would have killed myself years ago.

TV sucks royally!I wont let my kids watch TV anymore because there isnt any quality TV shows left. Everytime, you turn it on, you see violence and swearing, bedhopping, nudity, even and Unacceptable same sex relationships. Only 1 show i watch and "Extreme Makeover, Home Edition". No swearing or nudity or same sex relations. Just good people helping those who are less fortunate. Isnt that what this country is all about? Or used to be. I think our Television is as screwed up as our government. No more morals anymore. I wonder what our president watches on TV. Make you wonder, doesnt it?

Absolutly true. and some of those shows with "Questionable" values or suggestive themes are actually top quality shows- the affore mentioned L&O, 24, Prison Break, even the criticly acclaimed Sci Fi hit Battlestar Galactica is incredibly dark, violent , and full of sex. it doesnt make these shows garbage ; these are all high quality shows with excellent acting , sometimes deep thought provoking or at least highly suspensfull and interesting plot lines. tey are not everyones cup of tea granted. i myself feel that some of the sexuallity especially in Battlestar seems abit misplaced , over the top and unnecessary, but as mention above, it gets ratings and as long it does, these suggesstive themes will not only continue to be around but continue to push the envelope of morals and good taste..... as far as these total piece of crap reality shows go ( with all regards this includes the horribly emotionaly manipulative Extreme Makeover; Home Edition in which network execs play a shallow version of God and choose which familys hardships are worth exploiting for entertainment and spending umpteen million dollars showing the public how truely wonderful the hosts and and cast are....like there not gettting paid highly to "care" about these familys and build them lavish homes that are so unrealistic for tyhe millions of truely underprivlaged and hardshiped familys to ever attain but , lets be honest, these few "lucky"poor chosen famlies cannot possibly afford the property taxes and up keep on!!!!) value i couldnt agree more - ive been praying for years that this sicking trend in tv would meet a quick and brutal demise, alas it as not- the reason?- these shows cost next to nothing to produce and lets face it; we watch them- why is there so much crap on tv?- i believe we have to accept at least part of the blame...dont you agree?

Television is 99.9% Garbage!!! Reality shows have conquered the airwaves, and almost all of them are CRAP!!!!! Survivor is NOT entertaining, its stupid and Boring! Who cares if a bunch of people can survive a secluded island. People have done that many years ago before all of today's modern conveniences. Tv comedies now are insulting and full of swearing, and sex. I refuse to watch any new shows. I stuck to "Classic" TV. At least i dont have to sit there and be bored and unentertained. Give me "I Love Lucy" and "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" any day over "Survivor" & "Desperate Housewives"

actually, The Mary Tyler Moore Show was quite conterversial in its day and was considered 99.9 percent garbage by many who felt a single outspoken independent career woman with no wish to get married had no place on tv- the same was said about many tv classics-from All in the Family to Dallas- who knows, someday someone might be bemoaning what crap tv is in the year 2020 and yearning for the days of classic quality tv like "Desperate Housewives" which im sure will be on Nick at Night by then....maybe on this very web site...with any luck, right guys? ..... dont get me wrong; i agree with you almost entirely - especially on the 2 shows you mention- Survivor and shows like it are unadulterated crap, no question! and as for the Housewives....well im i 40 some year old male and clearly not the demographic they are shooting for so its understandably not one of my favorites....but somebodys watching those shows- a lot ofsomebodies - somebodies watching all of that 99.9 percent crap or, lets face it, the networks would yank it so fast it would give the few viewers it did have whiplash! TV is, has been and always will be a business, a big business. people dont watch- the networks dont make money- the shows get sent to tv hell and we get to write about it! fun huh!?!

I am so with many of you! The problem is that many of your executives and producers are way young or are old Baby Boomers trying to start up engines and trying to relate to the new generation of programming.
I am going to touch across many issues of what we are discussing here across the board..so join me and exchange your take on my mini-article about what we are all talking about because I am feeling much of what many of you are saying....
I would like to touch on the reasons that I am reading WHY cable television is so exceedingly disappointing..some of what I will say you may or may not agree on...but we are adults and we can exchange new lines of thoughts and learn from one another....
I have a problem with both. For one, Baby Boomer Execs used to be the hottest and most creative folks in the business. Rarely did they have cancellations for "regular" TV (for some of the newbies this to you would be NBC, CBS, PBS, WFLD ---old UHF "Fox", and ABC).
In those days, there were more hard working talented writers, actors, and all the usual suspects of television. They did not disappoint.
Everyone in America canceled gatherings at the bar to watch a kick Arsed mini-series or (when folks were not so "socially retarded w/ all things being "tech") folks invited actual friends to their homes and folks would make popcorn and be content with a great series or a mini-series or definitely some scary true story movie of the week.
These programs were produced with the utmost seriousness and no hold bars, glued to the seat entertainment. It was some where along the early millennium did it seem to somersault like the plague on every one.
Over 80% of Cable are fixated on folks under 35. This is highly insulting to the many of us who are the major source of paying for cable in the first place. Cable was suppose to be a choice. We were NEVER suppose to PAY to watch TV.
ALL that our grandparents did was to pay for the TV itself and this was a major investment. But not only are you paying for tech TV but you are paying for trash ass programs which hardly cater to the age group subjected to paying for a majority of the cable services.
It was the biggest back stab through and through as NOW we have CABLE. CABLE was not supposed to be commercially ridden all night long (like being stranded in a Vegas desert of darkness--alone in a bad motel room) and morphed all into steroidal advertisements.
On top of that, many of your Gen Xe-rs were screwed because many of us thought that the high quality of programming ( and I take this seriously because this is a special field of mine that I happen to take very seriously and was very inspired towards for many years).
There was a time that any one of us could actually LEARN from television and that is how good it was. But now comes "new terminology"........
Instead of calling a great series or serious programming a "documentary" or "docu-drama", they now call it " Reality Television" which, over night, pure garbage became a new high and with gag reflex mechanism for every time that you switched the channel. It is no longer " Well, if you don't like it, just turn off the TV or switch the channel".
No, no. It is more, throw the crap out of your window because 90% of what is being aired is a line up of poor talent, a lot of dumb wanna be actors, folks showing off and trying too hard and practically any one who wanted to be in front of a camera was allowed to be no matter how awful they were.
And the scary thing is that they took a small percentage of the folks who LOVED this crap and exaggerated all over the cable, meanwhile, insulting the intelligence of the dominate many who were and are at early retirement age who could finally say, whew! now I can really relax and watch something good.
WRONG. Lifetime Movie Network was one of the first to go down true "TV Hell". LMN was SOOOO great at one point, for at least nearly, 5-7 years until they catered to this otherworldly type of viewer called the "soccer mom".
Now, believe it or not, they became a subgroup who quickly rose the ranks of shoddy entertainment which infected many of the channels that we were all so used to expecting the better programs. WRONG again.
Soccer moms got to love watching themselves so much that they permeated all of most of 50% of watch you watch. Talk about "gag" re-flexing.
It was so ridiculous that many of us streamed into the "You Tube" where many of us wanted what we were used to watching, even if we watched it a hundred times before.
NOW, you got PIPA and SOPA all up against the relief of watching crap soccer mom TV, that they have now ruined even the Cool folks who were uploading earlier episodes going as far back as "McMillan and Wife" and the better movies which USED to air on Lifetime Movie Network.
They remaining 40% of Cable programming is just a mixed bag of sadness from shows like "Dog the Bounty Hunter to Sons of Anarchy to Survivor and junk ass cable/network television.
What ticks me off is that now, execs are so young and know nothing about truly attracting the audiences who are actually PAYING for Cable programming.
Remember, the Gen xers have the money and the experience now and we are the ones who PAYING to watch this crap.
Cable should have become WAY better than it became and now, yes, I am ticked. It is wrong. Execs refuse to pay or even program older actors, superior talent, who were shoved into the "other" category and practically disappeared from our screens.
Pay per view is ridiculous.
Did you know that Boxing was actually FREE at one time? Yes it was. But now, they have the nerve to charge 45.00 per game. Tell this isn't so..but yes, it is so and so on and again.
All over, The final 10% of the programming is very good because some wise EXEC had half a brain to bring back or produce some of the programming that so many of us were taught to judge for quality.
Take "Burn Notice", now this is a program of high caliber story telling, writing, editing and directing. The actors are in the Gen X er category and they are kick ass (which ALL execs SHOULD have allowed to take over in the FIRST place, seeing that they newer generation has the attention span of a orange peel).
I am not dissing ALL of the newer generation folks, there are some who actually can sit through an actual program and let the actors tell the story with out a thousand CGI twists and other weird ass interruptions take place.
Another program was "Monk" and thank goodness it was on as long as it was and actually allowed actors to show case their talents and were at least older than 25 or for that matter 32 (which is what programming used to be). Not everyone looked alike or all had blond hair and brunette roots.
Not all actresses sounded as if they choked on a duck or some bird (until on "Monk" the producers replaced "Shorona" w/ "Natalie"--who did sound like a cracked out chicken with that annoying snotty valley girl tone which is what a lot of actresses sound like all over cable---it is insane to listen to someone who sounds like your "boss")
And not all were idiots who simply spewed hate rhetoric under the guise of quoting the 1st Amendment free flowing diarrhea of the pie holes yap box slapping another with rudeness, openly despising anyone who did not share the blood sucking mindset of the 1% economic upper class thieves due to mere differences of backgrounds (like that idiot FOX network which truly came from TV Hell) which predominately makes up over three-quarters of this country.
How moronic can this be? And we wonder why we are not getting along socially with one another. Now, THIS is perilous television which teaches nothing BUT to butt heads with the common folks.
This is what former execs (old school) was trying to avoid and for good reason Let's ALL face it, Cable (true enough) forms more than 25% of the country's mind set because so many folks are truly addicted to television. Television/Cable became the "new radio" over the years. I am surprised that they air "60 Minutes" to this day and even that program is not what it used to be....
Producers and the billionaire "gate keepers" at least had half a brain to understand that if you pour gasoline over a portion of the country dependent of TV for entertainment, then, they knew that they had better be careful who was allowed to say or air anything that was offensive to the greater remnant of the country.
AT least, the former era knew the consequences of the power of television and cable became its X-Rated runaway train. Cable more or less does not entertain ,BUT pisses people off and leaves a sour expression on many of our faces.
Too much divisive "so called" entertainment at worst and far too many programs which are 24/7 news-ports which repeat terrible incidents of crime and horror all over putting the fear of the very worst in the hearts of viewers.
I am not talking, let's go Disney/Pixar (and do not get me started on the racket).
But what I am saying is that many of us want good story telling and professional programming the way it used to be. Believe me, this has very little to do with age because bad cable occurred over night in the most insidious rise ever.
It has all gone to potty in a crap shoot in less than 25 years and that is far too fast for programming across the board to dissatisfy so many folks like us.
It was not a steady down fall, like over 30 years, this was something else that every ad exec decided to "fund" to sell their junk and garbage that they actually have programs which are aired about folks cramming so much junk in their homes that they are now the new freaks of cable television or for shows about pawning and openly stealing the storage of belongings of another and actually lying about how great this is completely boggles the mind.
No wonder, Cable is depressing today. The entertainment is about shooting down the lives of others and show casing the deterioration of the common folks. It's the biggest insult of all time.
Truly, shows like "storage wars"...try breaking down the theme of the genre of programs like these (beneath it's veneer, these shows are about folks like you and me encountering financial hardships while keeping our hard earned belongings to thieving s**t heels who wait to steal your belongings from your child hood and sell them on E-Bay).
Tell me this is not ignorant ass television and then you have another program about a bunch of circus freaks Goth and biker looking hobos who "get off" over taking your car for which YOU have paid 75% of and for which they get off on chasing you down and taking your only mode of transportation to work.
This is about every day life and how they call this entertainment.
(I like motorcycles and Goth folks..please do not misunderstand...I am writing merely upon the way this is being displayed which is a double insult to this special group of folks as well)
It's about you and me and how they get off on humiliating everyday people as we live in this tough ass economy. Who wants to come home to be reminded of how crappy life really is?
Story telling is about creative escape and we pay a lot of money for that escape and that means something to every one of us for a multitude of reasons or else we would not be airing our vents on on such a board (which is excellent because who else cares about what we have to say anyway?) Well, WE DO!
Hardly any limitations of what is being said or who it is being said too. I do not care, cable TV is a very powerful medium for millions across this country and the surrounding others.
Our British and other international communities are no longer "attracted" to our programming as West has gone South on talent and crudeness with out shame.
The only hope that there is now is TCM which is slowly losing its uniqueness and now has become far too many young under 35 year olds hosting the show who know nothing about that era , except , that the execs really believe that the under 35 crowd is actually going to watch this channel.
When we were growing up, programming was predominately for adults and had always been that way for years before Gen Xers were even born.
NOW what we are all complaining about (and with very good justification) is that we are practically forced to like poor quality programming, actresses who are so carbon copied of another, cheap writing or no writing for that matter.
The reason WHY we are justifiably complaining is that television has no boundaries of true talent, anyone can jump in front of a camera and make their own shows and some subgroup of folks will love, love love it and force the crap on the rest of us who watched TV with our folks who were true adult who did not watch crap because EXECS and Producers at that time were also grown ups who did not succumb to force fed greediness and so easily entangled with shoving "youth forever" in the faces of more than 80% of your viewers who pay for cable services and who are older than 32.
Television used to be for grown ups..not dominating only the 20 something unworldly and immature folks....we see enough of this in REAL TIME.
It has become an insult and I am not surprised that so many cancellations are where they are.
Many of the programs need to be benched or shelved or tossed in the trash where they belong.
I mean really "Kendra on Top"? The misadventures of some basketball wife who is spending the guy's money and is so plastic and retarded "trying" to look like a great mom who in "reality" allows their maid service to be the mother.
Like right, she's actually any ones mom when she is busy bar hopping, and spending on bling further humiliating hard working others who cannot afford to even pass by a store who carries what Kendra wears per episode...it cannot "feel good" or enjoyable to NOT be able to access excellent story telling or documentaries when you have line-ups like this.... "Celebrity is the new power" as was quoted in the series "Political Animals" and how true that is.
Forget about the excellence that was once demanded in television when television was truly taken seriously.
You can count on MORE programs being canceled and bypassed by so many of us because as one guest wrote "There is NOTHING on Television" anymore and this is not some comment made due to being old, but simply because the truth is what it is.
Maybe folks like Ebert and Siskel and other honest critics of television and movies (back in our day) taught us the difference between garbage and art and we took it to heart because garbage just did not stand the tomato slam and you as the consumer of programming should not be insulted for what you pay for.
You are now PAYING for television (on top of that, cable has the utter gall to charge YOU 2.99 for movies that came out 40 years ago which we should be able to watch whenever we want for as much as we pay for cable) and cable SHOULD be better than it is.
When television was FREE, the programming was excellent and this is why box sets of former films and series from TELEVISION and NOT "cable world" are going through the roof. Just look at the ratings and to where folks are going on Amazon alone.
Okay, I have vented long enough, I will definitely be back for more.
I like TV Hell and just stumbled upon it for researching who is Joe Kenda and his bio because "Homicide Hunter" reminds me of when free TV was great TV and "Homicide Hunter" is a gem of a find and they had better not do away with this series anytime soon as they canned "Disappeared" which was a pretty solid series from "Investigative Discovery" cable channel.
USA is occasionally a half-way decent channel--- as soon as they trash shows like, "Covert Affairs" and " White Collar" and "Suits"...come ON!!! It's bad enough with the Tyler Perry shows.
I am sorry but "The Jeffersons" was a better series than any Tyler Perry or any of the other programs which they are segregating most of the programs to their "own" channels. Its like wtf....
I mean, what is happening here? Cable TV is tanking across board and it speaks volumes as to how they are "forcing" Americans to interact.
It is much better to involved integrated TV (as was in the 1980s and 1990s) RATHER than going ass back wards with more stereo typical images than ever and less intelligence about such themes.
I thought that we (as a country) were growing OUT of that mind set..guess NOT!!!
OMG ---("Covert Affairs" about another blond being over testosteroned and awfully silly looking) or that other idiot show...oh well, does it matter which one..as there are so many of them that just sound alike, look alike, and "blow up" more cars alike.
What happened to the mixure of men, women of color, or brunettes even?
...And here again, CBS is actually going to pull off "Elementary" (at least they have Lucy Liu playing the co-hort) but this is looking kind of silly.... the original networks are looking pretty d**ned sorry as well...the Fall line-ups are getting worse...it's like really, as poor Rodney King tried to say "can't anyone just get along here?)
....Why are men NOT the stars as they used to be any more and why are there so few dark haired women?....Think about that....
Cable has also feminized our male characters..which is why NCIS... (and NOT that pathetic spin off of this show as most spin offs are just plain BAD today..ugh!!).... is batting millions through the roof ( however, lately, they are plugging too many more annoying women on the show who have to be "Gibbs' Mirror image)...---if they had not canned Bellasario, this would not be happening...
(I KNOW I will be jacked for this statement...so let it be)...
Yes, as a female, I do not mind a little male chauvinism. Real women should know who they are and do not have to act so easily insulted about male dominance...the newer programs teaches women to be MORE insecure as the programs appear so d**ned silly...(at least Gabrielle Anwar is acceptable on Burn Notice, because she is highly feminine and proud of it and can squeeze out a good round of full metal jackets and look entertaining doing it)
..THAT I can watch...it's like the original "Charlie's Angels" meets "A-Team" and this show works.... At least it has texture and did not look so ridiculous. I can take Ziva (on NCIS..who looks the part of a Israeli Moussed officer)..
...THAT I can believe...but when you plug in tough lady "soccer mom" in there once again, this may come close to tanking if CBS is not careful...
Only "Burn Notice" ( and a handful of other which I will discuss on the appropriate forums) can get away with this because of the higher quality of writing and acting...
...more to come folks....

There really are decent shows on the air today. It is a matter of looking on the non-conventional networks. Maybe I have a warped sense of what is good, but look on, say - Lifetime, for example: There is a show starring Jennifer Love Hewitt (I know - I know) called "The Client List" that is really not half bad! At least there are beautiful women and massages with benefits, right? Anywho - give it a whirl - once, anyway. Cable networks, particularly the low ratings ones, can and often do surprise you! Look what happened with Nikelodeon and Miranda Cosgrove, for Pete's sake. She made them a boatload of cash! There have been many other cable "celebrities" that have brought scrambling "will work for chance to learn tv" plakhard- carriers who would be thrilled to bring a grip some doughnuts, who show a modicum of talent, and could be made into bona fide stars through giving them a shot writing (or giving them an acting break) which in turn would skyrocket their network into the top of the Neilson Ratings! Take a look at the bonanza cable networks have become (and achieved) in recent years by taking such risks! Don't overplay your hand, but don't shy away from the ante, either! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

TV has become like today's cars - bland, all the same, shapeless. Let us bring color, vibrancy, and life back in to television! Better yet, let's bring literacy and intelligent banter back in to tv. Best of all - let's bring excitement, life, love, and purpose back in to ALL television. And... let's not stop with tv - let us bring all of these ideas into our LIVES!
