How does the process work? If a show gets canceled after 1 episode does the network pay for any others that were produced?

The nets generally buy an order, so if they have confidence in a show they might by 12 episodes. If the show gets cut after the first or second airing, it's tough luck for the net. The production company had to pay everyone and everything involved with the show, so the network has to eat it. If the show is a turkey it will bring down an entire nights worth of ratings, which is what the advertiser rates are based on. It's less expensive for a network to just pull a show and eat the costs rather than have their ratings for the lead-in and lead-out shows drop. Hope this helps...
